Welcome to Latinometrics. We bring you Latin American insights and trends through concise, thought-provoking data visualizations.

Mortality ☠

Here’s something which may surprise you: if you’re between 15 and 49 years old in Latin America, you’re more likely to die by homicide than anything else.

Now, we should provide the caveat that overall, your chances of dying in this age range are pretty small. We specifically have chosen the young adult group (15-49 range) for our charts today since this tends to be a comparatively healthy group. In contrast to children or elders, which each are afflicted by disease and health complications, there tends to be more variety at the country-to-country level for young adults. Let’s dive in, with the small note that we excluded COVID-19 from our charts to provide a more long-term view.

Here are Latin America’s most common young adult deaths

Whereas cardiovascular and heart disease is the world’s largest cause of death within this group, in Latin America violence is a far more prevalent issue, as seen in the region’s two largest countries of Brazil and Mexico.

But beyond that, are there any differences in what’s killing Latinos in one country versus anything?
