☀ Domingo Brief — Venezuela’s Warship Deployment

Each Sunday, take two minutes to catch key stories and opportunities shaping Latin America.

Welcome back to the Domingo Brief! This week, we’re keeping up with Mexican cartels’ Chinese ties, OAS’s Haiti rescue pith, and more.

Trivia of the Week 🎯

Just under half (49%) of you correctly guessed Germany as the country Jair Bolsonaro has not approached for political asylum. Brazilian police have found a drafted letter in Bolsonaro’s cellphone addressed to Argentine President Javier Milei requesting asylum in Argentina. He also spent two nights at the Hungarian Embassy in Brasilia shortly after his passport was confiscated, although he never formally requested asylum there. Lastly, immediately before handing over power to his successor, Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro flew to the US.

Each week, tune back in for the answer to the previous week’s trivia question. No cheating!

🇨🇷 President Rodrigo Chaves appeared before a congressional committee, denouncing corruption charges against him as an “attempted judicial coup.” Costa Rica’s leader, in power since 2022, is accused of extortion through abuse of power to benefit another person by the country’s Prosecutor’s Office, a crime which carries a penalty of up to eight years in prison. The congressional committee has been tasked with recommending to the full legislative chamber whether Chaves should be stripped of presidential immunity so he can be tried for corruption, the first such case in Costa Rica’s history.

🇭🇹 The Organization of Americas States (OAS) has unveiled a plan to address Haiti’s political and security crisis, proposing $2.6B in international funding over three years. The roadmap was created with input from Haitian authorities, the Caribbean Community, and the United Nations, placing security at the forefront of the initiative’s priorities. The remainder of the funds will target political support for Haiti to rewrite a constitution, election preparation, humanitarian aid, and development projects, representing the most ambitious international effort to help stabilize the country in several years.
