Each Sunday, take two minutes to catch key stories and opportunities shaping Latin America.

Welcome back to the Domingo Brief! This week, we’re following Mexico’s pharmacy revolution, Venezuelan opposition leaders’ escape, and more.

Trivia of the Week 🎯

Merely 22% of you correctly guessed the Cenepa War as Latin America’s most recent inter-state war (even though we discussed it in last week’s story on military spending!). The conflict was fought between Ecuador and Peru over control of a disputed area between January and February 1995. Following their previous war in 1941, the two countries signed a border treaty that Ecuador declared null and void in 1960 due to how the treaty applied to the Cenepa region. A clash between patrols on the Cenepa River at the end of 1994 soon unleashed the start of the conflict. After a month, mediation efforts by Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and the United States led to diplomatic conversations to end the conflict, eventually resulting in the signing of the Brasilia Presidential Act in 1998.

Each week, tune back in for the answer to the previous week’s trivia question. No cheating!

🇦🇷 Argentina has officially launched the fourth version of the BOPREAL bond, intended for companies to pay off international creditors and remit profits overseas. The Central Bank will issue a maximum of $3B in various bond auctions, scheduled to begin in mid-May, and they will be subscribed to in pesos at the official exchange rate and paid for in US dollars. This follows the lifting of some foreign exchange restrictions after Argentina reached a new financing agreement with the International Monetary Fund last month.

🇧🇷 Brazilian meat exports to the United States soared in April despite enforcement of the new 10% tariffs imposed by the US government. Beef exporters sold 48K metric tons of beef to US importers, partly as a result of a severe cattle shortage which boosted American demand for beef imports. Brazil is expected to become the world’s biggest beef producer in 2026, surpassing the United States, while it already holds the title of world’s biggest beef exporter.
