Trivia of the Week 🎯
Just shy of half (48%) of you correctly guessed Brazil as the Latin American country which previously led the military component of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). The mission lasted from 2004 until 2017, during which Brazilian generals consistently held the position of Force Commander, MINUSTAH’s leader. Brazil’s leadership was essential in coordinating peacekeeping efforts, supporting humanitarian aid, and assisting in the reconstruction of Haiti following the country’s devastating 2010 earthquake.
Each week, tune back in for the answer to the previous week’s trivia question. No cheating!
Which Latin American civil conflict led to the 1903 independence of Panama from the Republic of Colombia? |
🇧🇷 Brazilian President Lula da Silva met with French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in France, advocating for support of the long-delayed European Union-Mercosur trade deal. The Mercosur bloc, which encompasses Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, faces stiff opposition from French agricultural groups fearing cheaper Brazilian competition. Lula will be the pro-tempore president of Mercosur for the second half of 2025, invoking the threats of unilateralism and tariff protectionism from the United States as the primary cause of a united response from the EU and Mercosur.
Latinometrics: The European Union has long been split on this trade deal, which 26 years in (currently) is the longest pending trade deal in the bloc’s history. While the European Commission has backed it, alongside key member states such as Germany, Portugal, and Spain, opposition is led by another, smaller group of countries like France, Ireland, and Poland. Italy is presently the big on-the-fence country. Unanimity is not required for ratification of the trade component, although it would need approval from at least two-thirds of the 27 European member states (meaning 18) representing at least two-thirds of the bloc’s overall population (roughly 300M people).
🇨🇱 Chile has signed a deal with Google to deploy an undersea fiber optic cable which will connect South America with Asia and Oceania. The Humboldt Cable, expected to be deployed in 2027, will be 14.8K kilometers long and will connect Chile’s coast city of Valparaiso with Sydney, Australia through the islands of French Polynesia. The agreement represents an unprecedented project in the region, cementing Chile’s efforts to depict itself as a major digital hub and a source of major investment flows from large international technology, mining, and banking companies.
