🇨🇴 Colombian Energy
Two departments you've probably never heard of are powering Colombia.
Welcome to Latinometrics. We bring you Latin American insights and trends through concise, thought-provoking data visualizations.
The Colombian departments of Casanare and Meta make for fascinating case studies. They don’t receive as much international recognition as some of the country’s biggest cities, like Cartagena or Medellin, yet they’re nonetheless vital to the country’s economy and growth.
Home to 1.5M people, the two departments produce a combined 71% of Colombia’s total output in oil & gas, arguably the country’s most essential goods. Hydrocarbon exports are worth $22B, by far the largest category of products traded internationally.

Meta & Casanare are Colombia's energy heartland
Not only do the regions’ operations play a crucial role in the economy, but they also help power the 64% of Colombia’s energy that oil & gas accounts for. Given this, we can understand why Casanare and Meta rank 2nd and 3rd, only behind Bogota, in GDP per capita rankings.
And beyond the impact measured in dollars and watts, the oil & gas industry accounts for an estimated 270K jobs, both directly and indirectly. Over 8K of those men and women work for our partner for this story, Magnex, which has served this crucial industry for over 40 years. Every year, it works with more than 1.8K suppliers, most of which are in… you guessed it, Meta and Casanare.
Magnex is committed to “building a legacy of sustainable prosperity” by embracing the present but also the future of energy through emerging, renewable technologies.
